Reuse in public spaces: what an outdoor machine needs

Public return points work around the clock, in changing weather and for many different users. The CityCube is built for this setting.

Reuse in public spaces: what an outdoor machine needs

In public spaces, reuse has to work without a counter and without opening hours.

What an outdoor machine needs

  • It has to run in changing weather. The CityCube has integrated climate control that keeps it running all year round.
  • It has to be easy to understand for passers-by, without training or an app.
  • It has to be open to several reuse systems, so that guests find one place for all returns.

Munich as an example

On the Viktualienmarkt in Munich, return machines take back cups and bowls around the clock, regardless of opening hours or the stall where a container was issued. According to the city, the project is planned for five years and is meant as a model for other markets, public places and transport hubs.
